All children are expected to arrive between 8:40-8:50am each day. We ask parents to say goodbye at the cloakroom door and allow the children to come into school themselves now that they are more grown up and in Year 1. When they come in to the KS1 cloakroom they will hang up their coats on their coat hook and come into class to start the early morning activity. PE kits and book bags will be stored in the classroom. (PE is on Wednesdays and Fridays).
In Year 1 we take a much bigger part in the life of the school, attending daily assemblies, hymn practice, Mass and other whole school activities. We join the rest of the school and have play time on the KS1 playground between 10.15-10.30.
Children may have a named water bottle in the classroom- containing water only please.
In Year 1 there will be formal teaching sessions every day, but there will also be some opportunities to continue to learn and develop through play. For an overview of our Year 1 curriculum please look at the Class Topic Plans web page which has details of each termly topic we cover per year group.
Children will need to bring their book bags in to school every day, as children may read with an adult more than once a week. Children should be reading their books at home every evening. Please record this in their Reading record notebook.
We will also be preparing the children for the National Phonics Check in June. If you would encourage your child to practise their phonics using the website www.phonicsplay.co.uk For more information about how we teach phonics at St Edmund’s please click here.
Some things to bring in…
Please could every child bring in a box of tissues– as we get into the winter months we will have lots of runny noses to deal with!
Children can bring a named, healthy snack for break time. We will have snack trays as we did in Reception, which we will take down to the playground at snack time. Children will also have fruit available to eat at playtime.
With up to 30 children in Year 1, we are sure you will understand that it is essential that all of their belongings are clearly labelled with their names, including jumpers, book bags, lunchboxes, drink bottles, PE kit and plimsolls.
Please make sure that your child has a spare pair of pants and socks in their PE bags, in case of accidents.
Parent helpers are always welcome- if you would like to come in and help please let us know and speak to the office staff.
We hope this information is useful. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have questions at any time.
