Welcome to Year 5!

I have enjoyed starting to get to know each member of the class and I look forward to seeing them progress as the year goes on. I am keen to work in partnership with you, so please do keep in touch and let me know how I can best support your child. This can be done via the class email (Class5@st-edmunds-rc.oxon.sch.uk) or we could schedule a TEAMs meeting.

Mrs Rowe and Mrs Agudelo will be supporting the class in the mornings as our teaching assistants.

Take a look at our Class Topic Plans web page to find details of the topic based curriculum we will be covering this year in Year 5.

Homework:

Homework will be given on Fridays and needs to be handed in on Wednesday. It will be marked that day, so it is essential the children remember to bring their homework in on Wednesdays. In addition to the written pieces of homework, I would like the children to read widely and regularly. One of the best ways you can support your child is to encourage their love of reading. I expect the Year 5’s to keep a record of what they are reading in their reading folder and regularly fill in their Star Reader sheets, these will be checked on Wednesdays alongside their homework.

Your child should still be able to log into Times Tables Rock Stars. I recommend them practising their tables for 10mins a day as this will make all the difference to their learning in Maths.

Target cards

Your children will continue to have their own personal target cards for Reading, Writing, Maths and Science. These will act as a visual record for them to see just how much they have progressed throughout the year. The children will bring their Target Cards home every month on a Wednesday and must return them to school on the next day without fail.

PE kit

We are scheduled to have PE on Mondays. Pupils are expected to attend school that day in their PE kit, which includes suitable footwear. This year Ms Kucz and an external sports coach will be leading these lessons.

Water Bottles

Children should bring in a named water bottle, containing water only, so they are able to have a drink as and when they need one.  Drink bottles may be left in school but do need to go home every Friday to be cleaned.

Snacks

As you will know from last year, Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack for breaktime.

Thank you so much for your support, I really appreciate all that happens at home to help your child arrive ready to learn. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if there is anything you want to discuss, and I look forward to an exciting year of hard work and new experiences!
