Art

At St Edmund’s, we encourage all pupils to feel able to think and act creatively. We believe that it is important for children to have a creative outlet and we understand the immense value that having the ability to express themselves creatively, provides for children’s well-being. Children are taught Art and Design through a range of creative and practical activities and we follow the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum. Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

In Nursery and Reception, Art is part of ‘Expressive Art and Design’. From Year 1 onwards, we follow the 'Access Art' curriculum and children complete five projects every two years.

The projects enable children to explore and develop skills in the following areas:

  • Drawing
  • Printmaking
  • Painting
  • Collage
  • 3D / Sculpture
  • Digital Media

We select projects which we think will motivate the children and help us to deliver a rich, exciting and relevant art education, while ensuring that the children are given the opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge that they need in a wide range of contexts.

As well as helping to develop skills, our projects provide children the opportunity to experiment, explore and take creative risks in their artwork. Every year, children make their own personal sketchbooks which are used in Art lessons on a regular basis. We believe that sketchbooks are a safe place for children to experiment, test and discover.

Within each project, children are introduced to the work of both Great Artists and Contemporary Artists. We encourage children to talk and give opinions about artwork as well as evaluating their own work.
