School Uniform
We want our school uniform to look smart, but we also want our children to be comfortable and ready to learn. We recently reviewed our school policy, which can be downloaded from the policies section of this website.
Most items on our school uniform can be purchased from many local retailers and you can purchase branded items online from our uniform provider, Brigade. During term time, school uniform items can be delivered to school free of charge. Please see the Brigade website for more information.
General Guidance
- Please ensure your child’s clothes and shoes are clearly named and that, if necessary, you provide a change of clothes.
- Children should bring a coat to school every day as our weather is unpredictable.
- Children should bring a spare pair of shoes for playing on the field. These may get muddy. They should be stored in a named bag which can be kept on their peg.
Purchasing Uniform
- All items are available from our online provider, but most can also be bought from other retailers. We prefer children to wear our jumpers and cardigans with the school logo. Red polo tops and PE tops with the school logo are available online but can be purchased without the logo from other retailers.
- We appreciate that school uniform can be expensive. The Friends of St. Edmund’s run regular second-hand uniform sales. If you require financial support, please contact the office.
School Uniform from Reception to Year 6
- School sweatshirt or cardigan.
- Grey skirt, pinafore dress, culottes, shorts or trousers or a navy blue, small checked dress or playsuit if preferred in warmer weather.
- Red polo shirt (branded polo shirts are available to order online or you can purchase unbranded versions from various retailers).
- White, navy or grey socks or grey tights.
- Black school shoes or sandals. (For safety reasons, high heels and open toed sandals are not acceptable. Please also ensure that your child is wearing suitable shoes to run about in the playground.)
- A named bottle for water with the ability to be re-filled during the school day.
- A book bag in Reception and Key Stage 1. Older children may prefer to use a small backpack. (Book bags are available to purchase online.)
- A coat – these should be brought into school even if the forecast is dry, as the weather can be unpredictable and we try to go outside at lunchtime whenever possible.
- A spare pair of trainers for playing on the field – these will get muddy. Children should store these in a named bag which can be hung on their hook.
PE Uniform
- School sweatshirt or a plain navy sweatshirt.
- Plain red t-shirt (branded t-shirts are available to order online or you can purchase unbranded versions from various retailers.) Football shirts and t-shirts with logos are not acceptable.
- Navy shorts or jogging bottoms.
- Trainers.
- PE t-shirts in house colours are available online to be worn on sports day.
- (Children will be expected to do gymnastics in bare feet. Socks with grips can be worn if your child prefers.)
- Wristwatches must be removed for PE. If a child is wearing studs because their ears have been pierced recently, it is essential that these are either removed by the child, or covered with a plaster for P.E. Plasters to cover studs must be provided by the family and are not available from the school for this purpose. Earrings must be removed for swimming. The teaching staff are not allowed to remove studs from the children’s ears or replace them after the lesson.
- Children who have swimming lessons require a one-piece swimming costume, swimming hat and towel. Swimming hats can be purchased at a reduced price from the school office. The wearing of goggles is only permitted with prior agreement from the school.
Jewellery and Accessories
- In the interests of safety and security no jewellery, apart from wrist watches and studs for recently pierced ears, is allowed in school. Please note the arrangements above for PE lessons. These requirements follow recommendations of the Education Department of the Oxfordshire County Council and is for the well-being and safety of all children.
- Studs may be worn for the first few weeks after ears have been pierced only if this is completely unavoidable.
- Children may wear a small watch. Parents should be aware that watches could be damaged or lost during the school day and that they should be brought into school at the child’s own risk. Pupils may not bring into school any watches or technology which allow them to record or take photographs or connect to the Internet. (Any phones or similar equipment which are needed on the journey to or from school should be handed in at the school office). If a watch is causing distraction or disruption to learning, the child’s teacher will request that it is not brought to school in the future.
- If your child’s hair is shoulder length or longer, it must be tied back. Please ensure that hair is kept away from your children’s eyes so that it is not a distraction. Hair dyes and sprays should be reserved for special theme days at school. Hair accessories should be plain and simple and in the school colours (red or navy).
