Science

We follow the Early Years Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum for Science and the children are taught both scientific knowledge and the enquiry skills they will need to work scientifically. Over the course of an academic year, each class studies five Science topics which include a mixture of scientific knowledge and enquiry skills. Each topic is broken down into five or six big questions which the children will address over the course of the half term.

In our Nursery and Reception Classes, Science is taught as part of ‘Understanding the World’ and children are encouraged to make sense of the world around them as they work towards the Early Learning Goals. Learning in this phase is very much by the children’s interests, but to meet the Early Years Learning Goals, children at the end of Reception should be able to:

  • Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
  • Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
  • Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

From Year 1 onwards, children follow the National Curriculum for Science.  For each topic, the class addresses five or six questions, which focuses them on the key ideas for each topic.  Through this approach, they learn a mixture of disciplinary and substantive knowledge.  The following document lays out the Science Curriculum from Nursery to Year 6:
